Classes will resume under normal weekly schedule on Friday 1/31/2020
Reality Sports Martial Arts provides self-defense training in the Puyallup/Sumner community. We provide a realistic no-nonsense approach to self-defense for kids and adults. Our progressive martial arts program is both applicable and effective for today’s self-defense needs.
Each student is unique in size, build and character and because of this each student brings with them some strengths and weaknesses. Our goal in physical training at RSMA is that each student will learn the techniques and skills that will strengthen their weakness while enhancing the strengths that the student already possesses.
The classes are unique and full of technique applicable for beginning through advanced students. The training environment fosters respect and confidence with the goal of creating a well rounded martial artist. RSMA programs allow for each individual student to take something away from the instruction that is given in each class while having fun in a friendly and safe environment.
Physical training is only part of the opportunity provided by RSMA. Spiritual development based on the words and life of Jesus Christ are explored at the end of each Reality Sports Martial Arts workout.
Kajukenbo is a hybrid martial art that combines Karate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Kenpo, and Boxing. The name is derived from the parent systems: “ka” (”karate”), “ju” (”judo”/”jiu jitsu”), “ken” (”kenpo”), “bo” (”Chinese and American boxing”). Kajukenbo was founded in 1947 in Oahu, Hawaii. It developed out of a group calling themselves the “Black Belt Society," which consisted of black belts from various martial arts backgrounds who met to train and learn with each other. This was the beginning of a progressive, adaptive style designed to combine the most useful aspects of the arts. We see this as the genesis of the mixed martial arts phenomenon today. Ge Shou Dao is the adaptation of the many continuing aspects of Kajukenbo.
All students will train together as a class; beginner through expert will learn techniques, as a group in a safe and fun environment. Children progress from beginner to advanced via a youth belt rank system.
Instruction for Kid’s Classes will cover self-defense basics for younger children, based in the disciplines of Kajukenbo Ge Shou Dao, Submission Grappling, and Wrestling. This combination of hand-to-hand training focuses on proper striking, defense, standing and ground grappling techniques geared towards self-defense. Instruction includes “hands-on” drilling practice and live situation training.
There are two categories for kids' classes:
Phase 1 Kid's RSMA Class is offered to kids ages 4-6 years old.
Phase 2 Kid's RSMA Class is offered to students that are 7-12 years old.
Adults will also receive training in the disciplines of Kajukenbo Ge Shou Dao, Submission Grappling and Wrestling. The adult class focuses on much more than the basics of hand-to-hand combat although proper striking, defense, standing and ground grappling techniques are covered in each class. Instruction also includes weapon control and disarms, and high-paced live training that includes ground defenses as well as multiple attackers. All students will train together as a class; beginner through expert will learn techniques and skills as a group in a safe and fun environment. Adults will progress from white belt through black belt as each student masters the curriculum.
Adult Self-Defense Class is offered to adults over the age of 12.
What is Submission Grappling?
Submission grappling is both a martial art and a sport. This style of martial art is comprised of numerous grappling disciplines blended into one single style. In general, the techniques are focused on taking an opponent down from a standing position, to grappling in the clinch and ground ranges, with the goal of defeating an opponent through the use of submission holds.
Usually this discipline is practiced on a soft surface while not wearing a gi. Grabbing clothing to gain an advantage is prohibited. The name "submission wrestling" generally refers to the submission grappling skill set while avoiding association with a single art like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Judo.
RS Submission Grappling
Reality Sports Submission Grappling is a progressive grappling program that joins Freestyle Wrestling, Greco Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Japanese Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Sambo into one style. This progressive style blends well with competitive no-gi training and is applicable in self-defense situations as well. We train in board shorts (grappling shorts), however gi bottoms and athletic shorts without any metal or plastic are acceptable. A rash guard or a tight fitting T-shirt is best for this class, and we do not wear shoes or socks. It is a fun way to get a great workout!
Adults and kids 13 years old and up may participate. Students younger than 13 years old may participate in classes if he/she has 2 years or more of competitive wrestling or grappling experience.
The Reality Sports Martial Arts program is made possible through donations only.
Though we do not charge for training, it is not "free" (there is a cost to provide it). We simply ask families to consider the value of training and determine what you are willing and able to pay for the opportunity. No monthly contracts are required for membership.
A donation box is available at every workout, or if you prefer to donate online click the virtual donation box below.
